An electric cut out allows you to open up a valve, electronically from inside the cab, which allows you to bypass the catback exhaust system. Allows your ride to dump its exhaust right after the headers or in your case exhaust manifold. Makes things alot louder. I don't think there is much HP to be gained since these cars are designed to run with the systems in place.

Great explanation! I was fumbling words in my head trying to figure out how to explain this!An electric cut out allows you to open up a valve, electronically from inside the cab, which allows you to bypass the catback exhaust system. Allows your ride to dump its exhaust right after the headers or in your case exhaust manifold. Makes things alot louder. I don't think there is much HP so be gained since these cars are designed to run with the systems in place.

they arent hard to put in, but sound is definately relative.
to some, they will say they sound good, and to them it does.
to others it may sound like your car has a hole in the exhaust or like something is wrong. especially and mainly underpowered cars. v8's and high powered cars they actually do sound agressive in my view. most v6's and smaller....no comment.
these benefit the most on cars that have high amounts of HP, like 400-500+ hp cars (the 12 and 11 second LX's you've seen) to where the engine is dumping out sooooo much exhaust, the catback actually can restrict the amount of flow.
on some cars they add HP and TQ, but those cars are highly tuned and modded. regular street cars, really no need unless you like the noise, and want to draw attention to yourself.

I never had electric cut outs but I did have a "Dump" basically the same thing but it had a flange I had to unbolt to open it. It was on my Ford Ranger 4.0L V6. It took a little power away but made the truck sound mean....also every once in a while it would backfire hard and shoot a small flame out of it. I used to have it coming out right under the passenger side door.....just watch your feet when you get out:D

please no one be offended by my views:
i say its "just noise" personally. theres an old saying. "HP makes noise, Noise DOES NOT make HP."
i'm just a believer in the bark shouldnt overpower the bite. if a car makes alot of noise, it shouldnt take forever for it to get outta view. the v8's can surely dip tail and haul rear. the v6's... not as effective.
case in point, richie highway down in glen burnie md. group of 4 SE/SXT guys with 3.5's frequent the pep boys near the jerry's chevy dealer. 3 have cutouts, one electric. sounds kinda cool at idle....on the gas, makes ALOT of noise.
everyone knows they street race/drag on rt 2 richie highway. the one with the electric cutout challenges a base rt with 22's no less. both of em draw off from the light in front of the dodge dealer.... rt is ahead by 5 cars and pulling after some wheel spin.
to me it just looked sad that the SE with a 3.5 is making ALOT of noise and has a quiet car of the same brand and build but slight step up. it also doesnt help their cause that the one member of the group without any cutouts has the fastest times at capitol raceway and has the same engine.
but like said, if a car is loud, i feel it should have the power to back the noise up.
I heard a grand prix with them on once and made it sound like a v8 it was kinda cool
thats cool if you dig it. by all means, brah. for me, i know if a v8 pulled up with the same cutouts, then the sound def would be distinguishable on who has the V8 vs the V6. sorta like people in 300's that put the "bentley" parts on.... if a real bentley pulls up at a stop lights.....people will know.
like said MOST, not all, but MOST v6's sound hollow when under load and on the power. like its missing 1/5 to a 1/4 of the exhaust flow.

I just said it was kinda cool but there is nothing like a real v8 not new school hemi but like the older 454s and 383s etc that are running headers only at the track, you know the 10 sec car now thoughs sound mean i wouldn't spend the money to be louder its just annoying in normal public places
