Column Shifter Conversion--Relax! Its pretty easy!

Hi guys,
I'd like to thank those who took their time to help others with some information regarding the shifter conversion. It was a pretty frustrating situation for me, and I felt that the instructions could have been a bit more detailed. Below, please find my step by step instructions for an easy conversion.

***VERY IMPORTANT*** The floor shifter assembly for 2008 and up has a different connector than the 2005-2007 models. It is not a 6 pin as mentioned below. If you have a 2008 or higher, you will just need a different connector, but nothing else changes. Just wanted to give you a heads up, because I don't have the diagram for it. It should still be cake for your electrician.

1-Purchase a used floor console (About $100) at a salvage yard (specific to your dodge charger by year), and remember that it needs the cup holder, chrome trim, and plastic storage above that which has the dc12 volt plugin to charge your phone. Don't forget the original floor console comes with A/C for the rear passengers, so you need to also get the black plastic air duct that goes with it. There will be a sponge blocking the main duct, so you need to take that out before inserting the tube. You connect one end to the console, and the other to the main duct. Its intuitive

2-Purchase a used or new "gear shifter assembly" (About $90 used), also specific to your dodge charger by year...The connectors and pins are different.

3-Purchase a used or new "gear selector cable" (About $48 new). The one from the column shifter will not reach. The correct cable is shorter, and goes from the transmission under the car through the firewall directly to the floor shifter. The car needs to be elevated, but it a pretty easy task for any mechanic. Once that's done, the floor shifter obviously should be installed, and the cable connected to it.

4-Purchase a used speedometer cover (About $25) to replace the one that has a hole for the column shifter. Take off the plastic speedometer cover and unscrew the column shifter, and disconnect the thin cable it has attached to the loom. That cable is for the auto shift, which sucks on the column shifter. Attach the purchased speedometer cover.

5-Get the diagram pictures below, and take them to a mechanic with electric experience. Explain to them that you need to match the 4 cables necessary from the 12 pin connector to the appropriate connector for your shifter assembly (6 or 10 pin). This requires removing the cables from the 12 pin connector, and attaching them to the connector which goes connected to your new floor shifter. This is very important, as it is responsible for the (autostick, gear placement and parking lock). You cannot drive your car without this! Connect the new connector to the floor shifter, and make sure everything works. Drive the car, and test the AUTOSTICK.

6-Place the floor console with the airduct tube in its place, along with the other attachments, and screw everything as appropriate.

The car will be obviously be inoperable without the gear selector cable, shifter and wiring. So, make sure you have everything in hand when you are ready for the conversion. I would suggest taking the car to a shop where you can do both the wiring and gear selector cable installation at once. To save yourself some more money, do the installation of the floor console yourself, and just let the mechanic do the difficult stuff.

For me, it was very important to do this. I wanted my car to look original, and definitely wanted to use the AUTOSTICK. In the end, it looks much, much better. The Police Charger comes with a few nice extras, such as the bigger brakes and steering amongst other things; and its a shame to settle for having that nasty police center console. The column shifter is not an original part, so it does not work great.

You will be very happy you did this. If you get everything you need, its a pretty quick and easy installation. Good luck guys!

I have a 2008 Police Package Charger with the column shifter and want to convert it to the floor shifter. I got a floor shifter box from a 2008 Charger 5.7 and it does not have the AUTOSTICK option, only the straight shift. Will this cause a problem with operation or will it just not have the AUTOSTICK option?? I plan on installing the steering wheel AUTOSTICK option at a later time. Just looking for some insight....Thank you

Shifter question

Hi
I don't know exactly what issues you will encounter, simply because the wiring to the shifter assembly may be different. My shifter assembly has the auto/manual shift feature, so I imagine it's wired differently. Just get everything you need, and take it to an electrician (mechanic). He should have the answer :)

Still trying to figure out how you went from a 12-wire system to a 4-wire system when the configuration calls for an original 5-wire to the main white plug in the harness.

I have connected both can-bus wires, the blue to pink, ground to ground and the green to yellow as shown in the diagram. This is causing a brake signal to deactivate the cruise control and starter. It also is causing a fault where the TCM only sees the car in Park and neutral, not D or R.

Thoughts? Do you have pics of your wiring harness completed?

THANKS!!

just a quick video on the installation of the floor shifter in a 2007 dodge charger police pursuit package. Click the link. https://youtu.be/MZhSsVpNM8Y
Nice video, Hulkster.

My column shifter makes a really loud POP when it goes into Park. It acts like a spring is slapping/releasing something that is built into the column shifter part.

Does anyone who has taken the column shifter apart know what might be making such a noise?

Most other Charger owners won't have the column shifter, and only the ones posting in here have ever taken the column shifter apart to tell me what's inside.

Here's another good write-up I found on another forum:
I just finished my 2012 Dodge Charger Persuit conversion from column shifter to floor console shifter.

Parts you will need:
floor shifter unit
armrest floor console
shifter cable, part number #0457 8758 AE
shifter bezel.

1. Set parking break, block tires and remove the negative ground wire from the battery.
2. Jack up vehicle, using a screw driver pry off the shifter cable from the transimission mount, I had to break the old shifter cable to completely remove from circular mount. Now attach the new shifter cable. Snake the new shifter up in front of the fire wall next to the old shifter cable and let it lay on top of motor.
3. from under the steering wheel, remove knee airbar and module on top of bag.
4. remove radio bezel, disconnect the wires from the radio and careful not to break the vents.
5. loosen and move forwad the shifter boot bezel. underneath the boot you will find a screw, remove screw and slide shifter out and disconnect harness from shifter.
6. with a screw driver pry off the shifter cable from shifter assembly.
7. remove harness from shifter assembly.
8. remove two screws attaching the shifter assembly to the dash board. remove mounting plat from shifter and remove. Now remove the shifter.
9. Now remove shifter cable from fire wall, pull out center wedge, this removal will require some force.
10. Install new shifter cable into hole the old shifter cable came out of, use dish soap to lubricate.
11. From inside of vehicle and under the dash, locate new shifter cable and snake it under the dash to console shifter location. connect to floor shifter. make sure transmission is in park and selector on shifter is in park. connect shifter cable and tighten adustment.
12. There is a small wiring harness, located on the column shifter, the wiring harness from the dash plugged into this. remove this from the old shifter. You will have to cut all the wires and solder in a 3 foot length of wire for each wire. be careful to match the wires and use heat shrink to cover the connections. Secure the wiring harness using flexible conduit or electrical tape and connect the dash board wiring harness with the new shifter.
13. Connect everything back, connect the battery and take for test drive. if everything is ok, finish up by installing your console over your console shifter. Depending on your model of persuit, you may or may not have connections for the usb, lights, cigarrette lighters.

I tried posting pics, but couldn't. If you need some pics or have any questions, let me know and I'll do what I can help you out.

Hi guys,
Thank you for the helpful information in the conversation about the column shifter to floor shifter mod. I'm not considering to do the mod, but I have a problem with the column shifter and was wondering if one of you could help me.

My gear shift lever spring broke and now I have a sloppy gear shifter. In order to get the key out of the ignition, I have to push the lever forward, towards the dashboard, then rotate the key further counter clockwise to Off and remove. If I don't push the shift lever forward, the key can't be rotated all the way to Off. As a temporary fix I have installed a couple of rubber bands to pull the lever up, but these rubber bands won't last long I expect.

I have searched on many part sites online but couldn't find the spring. Chrysler only sells the steering column as a whole assembly. They don't sell the spring by itself.

Since some of you have done the mod, would you be able to offer me your spring? Or do you know a place where I can find a replacement spring? I attached 2 pictures. One is a drawing of a similar shifter lever that shows the spring. It's not the identical spring but you'll get the picture what it's about. The other picture is a photo of the broken spring. Thanks for your help!

So back to the original post. Can anyone confirm that the autostick works (you can manually shift 1-5 by tapping left and right on the stick) using this conversion?
