I was wondering how can we get dodge's attention and convince them to possibly make a update that will let us owners of the 8.4 inch screens play movies while in park gear. I understand they deleted the cd DVD players from 2015 models but with that note they should still let us have the option to play movies from iPods or other devices.

A/V technology is DECADES behind the home environment in automobiles and .... I never understood why.

Why is there no Blu-ray player in cars? Seriously. Blu-ray came out in 2006! UHD Blu-ray is debuting at the end of the year. Same for 8ch PCM/lossless audio. At the local Jaguar dealership our salesman was all wide eyed about being able to play 5.1 DD/DTS with concert dvds. That would be cool like... 15 years ago.

Cars that have hard drives are usually like... 40gigs? WTF?!?! It costs $50 for 1TB and that's the price for me as a consumer buying just one drive. My cellphone has more storage.

Ugh. [/rant]

Again, A/V technology in cars sucks ass. Bring a tablet.

I agree 100% with this rant, lol.

Funny, I let a co-worker check out my interior the other day. Only takes a second or two for people to notice the huge touchscreen. What was the first question out of his mouth when he saw it? "Does that thing play Blu-Rays?!"

Might have been a dumb question to me at the time, but after thinking about it, why doesn't my car play Blu-rays?? It's 2015! I had a Durango back in 2006 that was playing DVD's. Come on now...

The AV systems in cars is laughable, yet we are somewhat limited to use this junk because our cars also interface with the head units.

This is the main weak spot in the cars...seriously. CD and DVD is NOT like cassettes. CDs are still the easiest way to play high quality files in your car. I have a LOT of DVD concert discs. What a hassle to get them onto a playable audio only format.

BTW, I have a stereo that costs what a Charger costs and CD is still very much alive for audiophiles.

So for HQ files I need to load massive files onto a fat iPod...or two. What a joke. Sometimes it's easier to just grab a few CDs. And in some cases the ONLY way to get good audio is with a CD as good downloads can't be had for those same discs online. I'm annoyed that Dodge gave me a tiresome file conversion job with this car and that's coming from a VERY high-end tech user.

Those who think CD is dead are WAYYYY out of touch. CDs still amount to roughly HALF of ALL MUSIC sales worldwide. So don't kid yourself. Taking CD/DVD playback out of my otherwise sweet SRT was nothing more than a cost cutting measure...and a stupid one.

Simple. How many accidents are caused by inattentive drivers (playing with radio, on cell phone, texting, etc?) Answer? - Lots. Manufacturers aren't going to put this capability into their head units and contribute to that problem. The only way they would do it is if it only works while in park, but how many people are going to sit in their car in park and watch a movie? Not many. And once you allow that capability, people will figure out how to jailbreak it and allow you to use it in motion (pretty easy to do actually).

I already had one guy cross the center line on a 2 lane road into my lane and try to hit me head on because he was looking at his phone instead of the road. Thankfully he pulled back before I had to drive my Charger off the side of the road to avoid him (I think the LED running lights helped get his attention in that regard). I would like to avoid more of those situations in the future.

CD sales are declining. May not be dead, but it's dying. I know you refuse to believe it and, therefore, it's not true in your mind and your opinion on this matter (like all matters) is the fact and everyone else is "opinion", but it's a fact that CD sales are declining in market share every single year.

Honestly I agree but the movie player isn't the cause of that. If that's the case they should just remove the screen from all cars as all the features on screen are distracting. Changing radio stations, setting your navi, and even trying to set your AC properly is dangerous when using the screen. I wouldn't mind parking to watch a movie as I'll be using it at work which most of the times is slow and I'm just in my car lol and another reason is my kids love to stay in the car with mom as I go in to the grocery market. It's just kinda ridiculous that dodge sold us less of a car for the same amount of money. I can also put on a movie while I'm sitting in the car with friends. My personal opinion but the screen regardless is dangerous wether your watching a movie or not.

Yep, I agree. It's the personal use that's the problem. But that doesn't change the fact that some people are idiots and can't use common sense or self control. If everyone used common sense and self control, there would be no laws and no regulations, no need for airbags, seatbelts, etc.. But that's not the real world.

If you have a large problem with distracted drivers, it makes sense to minimize the possible distractions, not give people more things to take their attention away from the road.

Just like if you have a problem with an overactive and hyper kid, you don't give him a bowl of candy and say "just have 1." Or if you have a problem with people entering cockpits of planes and hijacking them, you don't leave the door open and unlocked, allow guns, knives, etc. on the plane.

It's a situation where the possible harm is greater than the inconvenience of a few. I've seen far too many accidents where there was contact after someone crossed over the centerline because they were not paying attention. I've also avoided far too many for my liking (like the one I mentioned above). Distracted driving is a big problem in our society today. Possibly even worse than drunk driving at this point.

I agree with you that inattentive drivers is an issue.

I disagree that this is the reason why these caliber of systems are not in automobiles.

I used a perfect example in my last post. My fathers $90k Jaguar has a dvd player in it and it also has a very nice surround sound system. The salesman was sooo impressed that this car could do ....get ready for it .... ancient lossy 6ch Dolby Digital and DTS surround. OMGIMSOIMPRESSED...not. Yet simply it's distracted drivers that are what is withholding the technological capability to have a Blu-ray drive and support for uncompressed/lossless 8ch audio? I don't think so.

Also the hard drive is microscopical in capacity. $90k car and it can't have ohhh I don't know ... even over 100gig? It should have a terabyte and let the user rip to a lossless format.

These are fairly rudimentary yet high quality capabilities of even the most budget priced home audio system.

But anyway...

A/V in cars suck ass.

Yessir I agree with you 100 percent.. It takes one to **** it up for the rest.. Doesn't seem like this petition is going to go well LOL.

Yup, CD's are declining. And I never said they weren't. One day a CD may be like an 8-Track tape, but we're not even remotely close to that and CD is still a superior format for the car in most cases. That is a FACT.

Exactly what does that decline have to do with the fact that they remain the 2nd largest audio format in the world? When car makers dropped cassette tapes, the format had been mostly replaced with a superior one, but this is not the case with CDs at all.

By cutting the CD player from my car all Dodge did was save some money and cheat some of us. They didn't do anyone any favors from an audio standpoint.

CD's may be all but gone in 10 years, but this is TODAY and my SRT 392 can't play a simple CD or DVD concert disc??? BTW, my audio system streams from a custom Mac Mini fed through a modified Rega DAC, paired with Magnepan and Merlin speakers. I enjoy the high end of audio. But there's something to be said for being able to play a bloody book on CD or my old Pink Floyd discs without burning everything to files.

Then again...since high res audio files will eventually be replaced with streaming audio completely, why not remove that capability too?

Defending the removal of the 2nd largest audio format from a car is silly. And I know first hand that Dodge has gotten a TON of complaints about it.

Yep...can't control myself if I can play The Muppet Movie on my 8.4" display. And I will lose my mind if I can play the Blu-ray of Orca the Killer Whale. So no video for me! OR ANYONE ELSE.

Yep...can't control myself if I can have a car with 500 HP. So no SRT 392 for me! OR ANYONE ELSE.

Yep...that seems fair.

No cd/dvd player is a bit much at this point IMO. Its amazing how everyone has their own priorities, movies is the least of my complaints. I want to be able to have the wife find me a damned restaurant with the nav while we're enroute on a damned interstate, without having to pull over. That is about the dumbest safety feature I ever heard of, meanwhile I'm dodging every other car because the idiots are on the phone. U want to make driving safer, make phone illegal in all 50 states while driving.

This is my biggest peeve with my new SRT.

Good thing I still have a phone and it doesn't stop me from using it while driving....erm, if... I have to, of course.

Agreed. No NAV entry while driving is insane.

My ancient Garmin unit from 7 years ago could take ANY entry for ANY business/name and usually find it. Things like Pete's Pub were easy to find, yet the Uconnect is a song and a dance to use. Speech recognition is poor compared to my phone, Amazon Echo or anything else I have. It's the best unit out there, but YEARS behind overall. I can SAY to my phone "Directions to 205 Main Street, Bayside New York" and it has zero problem. The Uconnect can really struggled with that. Along with the lame stereo, it's the top complaint from all of my friends with FCA products.

Now that is irritating. You'd think they'd be able to sense of someone is sitting in the passenger seat and allow you to enter it in if it senses that.

As for voice recognition, mine works pretty flawlessly. Better than my phone.

Wow....500 bucks for a CD player and nothing special about it from an audio standpoint. It's likely using a Toshiba or Sony drive assembly that costs about 30 bucks.

I'm arranging for my stereo upgrade after my vacation next week and talking to the installer about a CD player as well. Right now it looks like I'm replacing all of the 3.5" and the shelf sub. then adding new amp and clean sweep.

You might want to look up the definition of the word 'fact'. CD's being superior for cars is a subjective statement at best. These cars can stream through bluetooth and have SD and USB capability. SD and USB can hold a shitload more .mp3s that can have a bitrate that exceeds CD if you wish.

People bitched and moaned about the demise of the floppy disc as well but its got to happen sometime, and apparently that time is now.
