Im sure this code could be thrown for several reasons but wanted to run this by the experts and put my mind at ease. Last time I had my car over @ BMC (About 3 weeks ago) I noticed a very small exhaust leak on one of the welds on the Kooks HF Cat...... its was leaking in front of the cat blackening up the flange that connects it to the LT headers.......

I figured I would get it fixed when I leave my car with Lisa for the shortblock install.....

Should I assume maybe the leak got a tad bigger and threw this code ?

I wanted to assume this was the cause but figured I would throw it out there

I had the same code a few months ago... Changed the gas cap and all was good.

Would it be considered and "Emission" Leak ?

Do you all think its more likely my gas cap vs an exhaust leak ?

I guess Im not going to worry too much until my modding gets done. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything that could lead to something major

Hey Dan P0456 is emissions small leak detected. Check the gas cap 1st. There is a diag chart in the knowledge base. Its really nothing to worry about. When you have the on a lift look at the emissions hoses for splits or cuts. Small leaks are difficult to find so you might not see anything.

I have thrown this code in my Charger Super Bee a few times. The CEL goes off after 3 trips in your car. If the CEL keeps coming back immediately you need to take the car in to have them look at it.

Here is more info. on the P0456 code.

P0456-EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK
  • When Monitored: With the ignition off, fuel level less than 88%, ambient temperature between 4° C and 43° C (39° F and 109° F).
  • Set Condition: As temperatures change, a vacuum is created in the fuel tank and Evap system. With the Evap system sealed, the PCM monitors the ESIM switch. If the ESIM switch does not close within a calibrated time, an error is detected by the PCM. One Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.
Possible Causes

EVAP PURGE SOLENOID VACUUM SUPPLY
EVAP PURGE HOSE/TUBE OBSTRUCTION
EVAP SYSTEM LEAK

also found this in online database: This pertains to your Charger SRT DRP as it is a 2007 model like mine.

Case Number: K51153649
Vehicle Issue: MIL on P0456 EVAP small leak detected.
Year: 2007
Model: LX - 300
Engine: 2.7L V6 24V FFV | 2.7L V-6 DOHC 24V (MPI) | 3.5L HIGH OUTPUT V6 24V N-S (MPI) | 5.7L HEMI V8 GAS (SMPI) | 6.1L SRT HEMI (SMPI) V8
Recommendation: Always check TechCONNECT for any related TSBs and to diagnose any active or stored DTCs. Check the system for leaks using the EELD Smoke machine set to air test to verify there is a leak in the system. If there is a leak in the system after verification using the EELD machine check the hose connection under the vehicles passenger side where the hoses run against the pinch weld, rocker panel. If the hose connection is not seated re-seat then re-test for any leaks. If the system still has leaks diagnose them as needed. If a repair has been made recheck the system for leaks before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

That might be the issue........ that heat shield/rocker panel is where they mounted my NOS line...... I had my car there a few weeks ago because that heat shield was coming loose and making a clanking noise..... Looked like some of those lines behind the shield weren't seated properly and they were pushing against it. For a temp fix they put a screw through the metal and screwed it into the rubber piece that holds the lines in place, of course screwing in where it wouldn't touch the lines. I was under the car while they did it....maybe something got slightly pierced or because the lines aren't seated its chrimping something.......

Thanks for the help you all.....for now I am not driving my car too much..... I will make sure this is addressed when the motor gets pulled

We can definitely look into this when we do the 426 install, that was why our first choice was not to screw in those shields ;).

Also, check the gas cap too, as it may be something easy like others have been saying. :)

Thanks for the reply Mikey! I did inspect the gas cap this morning. From what I can tell the rub seal/gasket on it seems clean and unworn.... I made sure it was secure. I guess we shall just wait and see..... I won't be driving my car much between now and then so I might not throw the code again. I guess we'll just eyeball the lines when we have the motor out!

Mine looked perfect as well... but it was still bad. I replaced the cap, cleared the code and all was good.

I have seen that happen also. We have a 'smoke machine' at work to help detect leaks in emissions systems. We also test the gas caps with it. I've seen many that looked good but leaked when we apply the smoke to them.

Hello, I have a 2010 SE Dodge Charger that the gas cap light came on. I replaced it and the light did not go away. I did a smoke test on the line and noticed smoke coming out from the hose that goes under the car near the canister on the passenger side. Looked underneath the car and noticed smoke coming out of the bottom hose see picture . Can someone please tell me what the name or model number of this part is to replace?
Is there any video to show me how to replace this as it is hard to remove. Thanks in advance
