Hi Everyone

Recently purchased a 2012 Charger SRT8 and the dash display just starting saying I need an oil change. I called the local dealer but they are quoting me $120 for just an oil change, is there something special about the oil changes on these cars or can I take it to Jiffy Lube?

Thanks

Just my .02, I'd stay away from Jiffy Lube.
Go to the dealer or a shop you trust. The SRT uses full synth oil, and it's a bit more expensive than regular dino oil. My 06 manual says 0w40 Mobile1 only, and it cost me a tad over $70 at my favorite Meinkie shop. Not sure what they spec'd the '12 SRT's at.
If you still have warranty, prob best to have the dealer do the oil, to protect your warranty should there be any issues later on.

Do it yourself as it's very easy to do. It will cost you around $40 at most for the oil and that's if you go with Mobil 1. I can get a 5 quart jug for $25 the local autoparts store. Then add another $8-12 for filter.

Jack the car up, undo 4 bolts that hold the belly pan up and then pull the drain plug. After you drain the oil, change the filter and then add the new oil.

Yeah that sounds like my co workers who own Beemers and Benzes pay for their oil changes and maybe more...You DIY oil changers, how do you dispose of the discarded oil?
Take it to O'Reilly's, Advance Autoparts, Autozone or pretty much any auto parts store and they will dispose of it for you for free. :D I just pour the old stuff into the jug/containers that the fresh oil comes in.

I purchase a Mopar Oil change package that Dodge offers. It's four oil changes with the 0-40 Ultra oil with filter for I think $240 plus tax. That a pretty good deal using that oil. But I believe the four oil changes have to be used within two years. I drive mind every day so using them will not be a problem.

Got it, stay away from Jiffy Lube, done.

Do I need to do anything special with regards to the warranty and making sure it's not voided if I do it myself?

Thanks for all the feedback.
Keep your receipts and make a log with your millage and the date that you changed your oil. You should be good to go.

9 vehicle purchases from them over the last 25 years, and 3 in the last
2 1/2 years, I got some Gold or Platinum customer status. Don't know all the details, but I do enjoy me ass being kissed when I stop by. :)
PFFFFT!! My '13 R/T is the first truly new car that I've ever purchased and I got free oil changes for life... :) Transitowne (chain of dealerships up here) offers free changes for life (up to 4 per year, for 7 years, technically) on all new vehicle purchases. The only problem is that I went to the one that my buddy works at (as a salesman) to buy the car, and it's a 45 minute drive up there... I just try to have another reason to travel that way whenever I need my oil changed. Or find something to have them look at on the car. :)

Anyway, for the OP, you may even want to ask your dealer if you can provide the oil and filter. That, sometimes, is acceptable and can save some money. $120 is outrageous for an oil change. Oil and filter should cost no more than $60 (closer to $40 or $50), and it's a 15-20 minute job. You could always try another local shop, but make sure that you see proof of the synthetic, and that it's on the receipt.

My dealer charges $19.95 for oil changes up to 5 quarts of oil. Since both of my vehicles have Hemi's I end up paying $23.97 for the Ram 5-20 w and around $64.00 for the Super Bee for 0 -40 w Mobil 1.
I would look for a cheaper place or do it yourself. If you do it remember to keep receipts for the oil and filter in your files.

I keep a log of everything I do in excel and track miles between oil changes as well as average miles per day. But I've NEVER had an issue at the dealership with any of my vehicles where they questioned not bringing it to them for oil changes.

Does't hurt to keep a log regardless if you ask me. I like to have records of everything about my vehicles and if and when I sell them, it helps with the sale because I have all the records for them. :D

Do you have Lifetime Warranty? If so. Is it from Dodge or the Dealership? I got a Lifetime Warranty on my Jeep Patriot and we are forced to go to that Dealership for service or the lifetime is voided. I asked about doing the service myself and was told No or I void the warranty.

I pay $70 at the dealership for Mobil 1 0w-40. The second gen SRT8's comes with Penzoil Synth 0w-40. Chrysler now has a contract with Penzoil. My wife's SRT gets Penzoil but I still use Mobil 1 on mine, 111,000 miles and no issues.

The nice thing about synthetic is that you can use it for a longer period of time than conventional, since it won't break down.

$120 is steep though. I ran synthetic in my old Jeep at $60 an oil change.

What oil weight of synthetic would I use for the pentastar v-6? I would never trust a jiffy lube or quickie oil change place. It's either DIY or dealer.

5W-30 is what Chrysler says to use. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic in my Charger. I went just over 8K miles between changes last and the oil still looked very good.
Thanks! Our cars take a full 6 quarts correct? I wonder if I bring my own oil if my dealer would do it as I have 1 more free oil change. Shoot it would better for them anyways as they would be saving there own oil.
