Since my car has not been updated with maps since 2011, I thought there was a thread about kicking around a GPS update. I would prefer not to give them 150 bucks for the 2015 maps, I guess if I have no choice okay but can anyone help a brother out. Thanks folks!!

Here in Jersey the roads are constantly being worked on or re-routed. It's almost a necessity but I'm like the rest & don't want to pay the crazy high price. If it were cheaper to update then I'd be all for it as I use my gps all the time.

Thanks for all the replies, I may just bite the bullet & get the updated disc. My maps still worked just fine for me yesterday but I can tell they need to be updated. Maybe I can hit the local stealership & work a way in with getting something for free, who knows.

Did you visit the link I provided? Buy a compatible Nuvi with lifetime updates for cheaper than what an out of date disk costs and learn the easy procedure. You then have lifetime map updates for your car.

So, technically, someone could send you an SD card and get the update from your NUVI, and you send the update back on the card and voila? Updated maps for all? lol

Technically yes, but..
1. You can't do the update from an SD card.
2. That someone should contribute to the cost of the original Nuvi purchase (no one rides for free), and that's assuming said other someone would want to get into the illegality of distributing Garmins software.

I searched through that link and a few other sites and still haven't found a conclusive list as to what Nuvi models will work. It would be very helpful to have a list as to what has worked for people and what model of the Charger Garmin they have.

Thanks,
Grant

1. Well, a USB stick then.
2. I'm actually coordinating with another member to get my update for free next weekend. If I can copy what he has onto my own USB, i'll pass it around to anyone who wants it and pay it forward. So i'll help as many as possible ride for free. :TU:

The main thing you need to look for is that the Garmin has maps for the entire North American continent, and the Puerto Rico, Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, etc.

You'll also want to make sure that it has voice recognition, Junction View, and for '13-'14 radios, 3D landmarks.

I've been using a 3590 for a couple of years for my maps, and I know the 3490 works well too. I've heard the newer 3495/3595 model work as well.

I'm not sure how well openly sharing maps would go, because the maps have data identifying which Garmin device downloaded them. It wouldn't seem hard for Garmin to blacklist a particular unit and cancel the lifetime update subscription for it.

If the maps were shared within a small, controlled group of people it would probably not be much of an issue, but I don't think openly sharing them with the public would be a good idea.

You can pick up a refurbished unit for around $100, which doesn't seem like too bad of a deal. The only feature that you will lose by updating the maps from a nüvi is being able to search for POIs by phone number - but I'm not sure how useful that was to begin with.

You can also get maps from the underground gps forums, but those maps are usually edited in some way. That isn't a problem with a nüvi, but our cars are very picky that the maps are perfect, and it's a 50/50 chance that they won't load.
